Downtown historical center in Pombaline Lower Town. This is an area of great touristic interest, housing every year thousands of visitors who come here to spend their holidays. This area is defined as “consolidated historic center” with medium high buildings dating hundred years ago (rebuild from the big earthquake of 1755), generally occupied by offices (banks, insurances) and public institutions. Dates the 19th century and is built with “Pombaline Cage Technique” (1st examples of earthquake-resistant construction). Has 6 floors; upper levels for offices and 2 independent building unit denominated “A” & “B”.
